a) 7 (x + y) + 4 (x + y) =

answers:

a) 7 (x + y) + 4 (x + y) =

7 * (x + y) + 4 * (x + y)

(x + y) * (7 + 4) =

11 * (x + y)

b) 5 (2y – 3) + 7 (- 3  + 2y) =

5 * (2y – 3) + 7 * (2y – 3)

(2y – 3) * (5 + 7) =

12 * (2y – 3)

c)  6 (4x – 5) – 4 (5 – 4x) =

You have to change the signs in (5 – 4x) by factoring (- 1)

6 * (4x – 5) – 4 * (- 1) (4x – 5) =

6 * (4x – 5) + 4 * (4x – 5) =

(4x – 5) * (6 + 4) =

10 * (4x – 5)
