fraction problem 6:
Determine the lowest common denominator and calculate the value, reduce the solution and write as a mixed fractions if possible!
2 2/3 – 1 3/4 + 3 3/5 =
answer:
transform in improper fractions:
2 2/3 = 2 * 3 + 2 = 8/3
1 3/4 =1 * 4 + 3 = 7/4
3 3/5 = 3 * 5 + 3 = 18/5
→ 8/3 – 7/4 + 18/5 =
the lowest common denominator:
3 = 1 * 3
4 = 2 * 2
5 = 1 * 5
2 * 2 * 3 * 5 = 60
calculate the value:
to make the bottom numbers the same you have to multiply the top and the bottom of
the first fraction with 20 (because 3 * 20 = 60)
the second fraction with 15 (because 4 * 15 = 60)
the third fraction with 12 (because 5 * 12 = 60)
8/3 – 7/4 + 18/5 =
8*20/3*20 – 7*15/4*15 + 18*12/5*12 =
160/60 – 105/60 + 216/60 =
376/60 – 105/60 = 271/60
write as a mixed fraction:
271/60 = 4 31/60 (271 : 60 = 4 and 31/60)
