Eine Insel ist ein Stück Land, das vollkommen von Wasser umgeben ist.
Dabei muss die Insel selbst (auch bei Flut) ständig über Wasser sein.
Ab einer gewissen Größe werden Inseln als Kontinente bezeichnet.
Dazu gehören die australische Landmasse, die europäische-asiatische Landmasse, Afrika, Amerika und Antarktika.
Die größte Insel der Welt ist Grönland (siehe Abbildung oben).
Mit einer Fläche von 2.130.800 Quadratkilometer ist sie 6,1 mal größer als Deutschland.
